The new TactTiles Multi-Sport sports hall floor surface in Horley was recently attacked and severely damaged by vandals using hammers or iron bars. Within 48 hours TACT had attended site and repaired the damage by replacing individual tiles.

The world famous International Scout Centre at Blackwell Court in Worcestershire had on the site an old barn with a dusting concrete floor. The management wanted to up-graded this building from a scouting 'Dry Shelter' to an all-purpose Multi-Use Games Area meeting modern standards. The brief was for an anti-slip surface capable of being played upon in any type of footwear.

We were also asked 'what's it like with arrows?' as archery is a popular sport at Blackwell Court. The task of resurfacing a large library floor is huge. The Armagh library facility managers were looking to install a safer surface with the minimum disruption to the facility. The moving of the shelves with books in-situ was already solved, but what surface could take the weight of all this movement, whilst still allowing the flooring surface process to progress

The management contacted Tact Specialist Flooring and were recommended to trial the Piazza Grade surface. A small area was purchased and thoroughly tested.

The library staff were extremely comfortable with the choice and the Facility Manager could see what a boon this would be with the ease of installation and fitting.

The entire library floor was then purchased to be installed with local staff and to cause the minimum upset to the library and its many happy customers. The manager said TactTiles were the most cost effective and rapid flooring system he could find and would have no hesitation recommending them for any other library having to carry out a similar floor refurbishment operation.

The main concern for most Librarians is the anti-fatigue factor of a flooring finish. Library staff have to stand for many hours sorting and cataloguing books. The Armagh library staff were concerned with benefits for TactTiles and so chose to trial an area first. Needless to say the trial was a total success and the entire refurb project saved hundreds of manhours. A total area of 1200 square metres have been rejuvenated with this innovative modular system.

PVC solid flooring tiles are an ideal floor covering for many internal domestic and commercial floor applications. This type of flooring is economical and easy to lay normally ‘locking together' with inbuilt dovetailed fittings.

Polypropylene ‘raised' floor tiles are also an ideal and versatile floor covering for domestic, commercial and industrial applications both internally and externally. These tiles lock together with strong male / female fittings creating a seamless surface.

1. THE DIFFERENCE is SUBTLE but SIMPLE - CONCRETE FLOORING SCIENCE

The very difference in these 2 varying plastic surfaces is the word ‘solid' and ‘raised'.

The PVC tile lies on top of the concrete and replicates the hardness of this sub-floor. They can then trap moisture and air beneath this impermeable membrane and can cause long-term problems to the buildings structure. Check if you have a DPM layer.

The Polypropylene tile also sits on top of the concrete, but due to its unique construction and raised design it allows the foot surface to receive a ‘flexing' posture and is therefore far more comfortable to walk, stand or play upon. The open design of the polypropylene tile also allows the sub-floor to breathe naturally thereby preserving the buildings integrity.

2. SOFTER v RIGID

PVC tiles are inherently softer in feel to the hands, but are laid directly onto the floor (normally concrete) and replicate this dead drop surface.

The Polypropylene tiles are more rigid, which can sometimes be seen as a disadvantage and stronger however the flexural effect is now noted in #1 above and any fall onto these tiles results in little injury.

The Swedish Tennis Association states these tiles are ..."very good for tennis players back & leg joints"

3. IS FLATTER BETTER?

From the flat surfacing point of view the PVC tile can start to ‘curl' over time and / or heavy use (especially heavy weight traffic) causing trip hazards around the dovetail jointed edges. Also the sub-floor must be very flat and level or the joints will suffer once again.

Polypropylene tiles can take a lot of bash & crash before any joint damage occurs and really heavy weights have been used on these tiles. The tough connection method holds on in all conditions. The flexural capabilities allow these tiles to cover undulating territory admirably.

TO WASH or NOT TO WASH

PVC does stain far more readily then Polypropylene (which is commonly used for chemical storage tank building). PVC can certainly be stained by car tyres in garages and these tyre marks are permanent.

PVC tiles can be readily mopped and are seen as a cleaner option to open textured polypropylene tiles, but inevitably the cleaning water will penetrate the joints of the tiles and stagnant water will result beneath the surface causing odours and building problems as outlined in point 1 above.

Polypropylene tiles with their open raised textured surface allow for the same type of cleaning, but any waters passing beneath the surface rapidly dries out and if found to be standing or puddling can be readily removed with a wet vacuum.

A suitable chemical protective coating can be applied to the concrete floor (especially in garages or around swimming pools, changing rooms) and the polypropylene tile laid over this for ease of deep-cleaning.

TO LIFT or NOT TO LIFT?

PVC tiles may require deep-cleaning, but each and every tile requires uplifting separately and is a very heavy job to move.

Polypropylene tiles may require an occasional deep-clean, but most designers include an unzipping tool and this allows for the rapid up-lifting of this lighter weight floor into panels. A rapid and hygienic operation results.

SUMMARY

Therefore the PVC tiling system is very good in light domestic applications and the Polypropylene tile has a wider installation range.

The Polypropylene tiles start from the surface down creating various grades of surfaces for specific work, sports and domestic uses. The undersides of the Polypropylene tiles are also varied to suit the amount of flexural capabilities (soft for play areas harder for factories) required and to effect better drainage flow for wet and outdoor applications.
